PSAT
September 2024
Dear Class of 2026, Class of 2027, Parents and Guardians:
As we start a new school year, it is important to consider some of the aspects of the Junior year. Junior year is an important year for students academically as well as the time students begin to focus more on the transition to life after high school. Part of the preparation for this is college entrance testing, traditionally, a major component of the college admissions process. Although there have been some shifts in colleges and universities using entrance exams, our recommendation is for students to still continue to take them. The two most common exams are the ACT (American College Test) and the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) which students take for the first time in the Spring of their Junior year and then again in the Fall of their Senior year.
In preparation for the SAT, a practice version called the PSAT/MNSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is offered each Fall. It is modeled after the SAT, which many students will take before applying to colleges. The PSAT provides exposure to the types of questions and testing conditions experienced in an actual SAT. It measures skills that are important for success in college in areas such as critical reading, mathematical reasoning, and writing. The PSAT also serves as a qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship, awarded to students with competitively high scores. This national scholarship opportunity is only available to Juniors. Sophomores are not eligible.
Sophomores have the opportunity to take the PSAT. Taking this exam as a Sophomore would give a student more practice, but it is important to remember this is a Junior based test. Sophomores do not have the extra year of math and English anticipated by the test’s questions so the scores are usually lower than in Junior year.
The test will be administered on Saturday, October 12th from 7:45am until approximately 11:00. This administration will be a digital format, not paper and pencil. Students must register through their school assigned Google account, using this LINK by September 13, 2024. The cost of the exam is $30 - Cash only! The fee must be submitted to the counseling center no later than Friday, September 20th . No exceptions. The fee is non-refundable. A limited number of fee waivers are available for qualifying Juniors only.
Reasons to take the PSAT:
Practice for the SAT
Get feedback on academic skills - areas of strength and areas for improvement
Get admissions information from colleges and universities
Enter the National Merit Scholarship competition (Juniors only!)
SAT and ACT are both accepted by colleges and universities. These institutions will use the test scores that best reflect a student’s strengths. Students should consider both tests. If a student prefers to only take one, they should try a practice test for both ACT and SAT to see which they do better on. Sample tests and practice are available on each respective website: ACT and SAT. Test preparation help is available at various locations throughout Western New York as well as online. Please be aware that EAHS does not promote or endorse any program and there may be costs associated with these programs.

Creating an Account with College Board
A College Board account is the only way to access PSAT score results. Students who eventually register for the SAT will do so through this account. Along with the score report, students will be able to link to Khan Academy for free, personalized SAT practice based on their PSAT test results. Students who have already taken an AP exam will have a College Board account. It will take approximately 20-30 minutes to set this up.
The student should create this account, not a parent.
