Dear EA Parents and Guardians:
As the summer draws to a close and the leaves begin to change, The Technology Department is very excited to welcome your students back to begin this new academic year! We are especially looking forward to supporting the East Aurora School District’s students' use of their 1:1 Chromebooks and the additional opportunities to collaborate, communicate, create, and apply critical thinking skills in their learning that these devices offer.
As we did last year, all of our K-12 students will continue to use their District-issued Chromebook, charger, and protective carry bag in their classrooms. Just like their school supplies, students are responsible for their District-issued Chromebook’s safekeeping and proper use. Please help your student to remember to charge their device every evening and bring it to school everyday for those that bring them home. For all students, we kindly ask that you and your student read over, sign, and submit in the Parent Portal the Device User Agreement form by Friday, September 23, 2023.
Your child will be using their Chromebook for instruction, assignments, projects, research and assessment throughout their day. We all know, regardless of how much you supervise your students while using these devices or teach them to take care of them, device accidents can happen at any time – at school, at home, in the lunchroom, on the school bus, the playground, even when devices are in their backpacks! In addition, your child will keep their device for 4 years.
This year we will continue to offer families of students in grades K-12 the ability to purchase Safeware Chromebook insurance for the 2023-2024 school year for $35 (+$2 processing fee) for the 23-24 school year. This optional, zero-deductible device insurance policy provides coverage for accidental damage: drops, falls, spills, and other unexpected events, theft, burglary & robbery, fire, flood & vandalism, and power surge. Please see the linked flyer for additional information.
If you decide to purchase the device insurance, you must complete your insurance enrollment in Safeware’s online portal (partner.safeware.com/openenrollment) by September 30, 2023. Unfortunately, you will not be able to insure your device once the enrollment period has ended, unless your child is new to the District. All you need to know is your Student's Name, District ID (DIST0104), and the Device Serial number to purchase insurance. The Device Serial Number (SN) can be found:
- on bottom of the chromebook next to SN, Serial Number, ST, or Service Tag
- or by powering on the Chromebook and pressing ALT + V when you see the sign in screen. The SN will show in the top right of the screen,
- or by emailing webmaster@eak12.org and we’ll send it to you.
If you need assistance with this process please call the Technology Office at 716-687-2402 and we will help you over the phone. If purchasing insurance is a hardship, please contact the Technology Department.
If you elect not to purchase insurance on your child's device, you assume responsibility for the cost of repair or replacement if the device is not returned, damaged, or lost. Fines are structured in a 3-tier manner:
1st incident $35, 2nd incident $75, 3rd incident $320 (full replacement value)
AC Power Adapter Replacement Fee $35
Checks payable to East Aurora Union Free School District
We believe our families know their children best, and every household has unique financial circumstances. As such, we’ve put together the below comparison chart to assist in making your decision:
Considerations: | Not Insured | Insured |
Upfront Cost (entire school year) | $0 | $35 |
1st Repair incident | $35 | $0 |
2nd Repair Incident | $75 | $0 |
3rd Repair Incident | $320 | $0 |
Lost/Missing Chromebook | $320 | $0 |
Lost/Missing Charger fee | $35 | $35 |
Over the course of the year, if you experience a problem with the Chromebook, please send an email to webmaster@eak12.org or call the Technology Office at 716-687-2402 and we will help you over the phone.
Welcome back and best wishes for another great year in East Aurora!
Sincerely,
Christie Maisano
